A burglary is disorienting. This guide gives the correct sequence of actions after a break-in in South London — from calling 999 to insurance documentation and same-night security repairs.
Do Not Go Inside If the Intruder May Still Be There
If you arrive home to find signs of a break-in and are unsure whether the intruder has left, stay outside and call 999. Only enter once police have confirmed the property is clear.
Step 1: Call 999 or 101
If someone may still be inside: 999. If it is clearly a past burglary: 101 (non-emergency). Officers will attend, take a statement, and issue a Crime Reference Number — which your insurer will require before processing any claim.
Step 2: Do Not Touch Anything
Before police attend, avoid touching surfaces, moving items or cleaning up. Photograph all damaged areas on your phone: the broken door, forced window or damaged lock, and disturbed areas inside. Do this before anything is moved.
Step 3: Call Your Insurer
Most policies require notification within 24–48 hours. Note: insurers may ask whether the entry point had a BS3621-certified lock — this affects your claim if the answer is no.
Step 4: Call an Emergency Locksmith for Same-Night Repairs
A damaged entry point must be secured the same night. TrustLock attends break-in calls across Dulwich, Peckham, Camberwell, Brixton and South London. On the same visit we can replace a damaged cylinder, temporarily board a damaged frame, and advise on security upgrades to reduce repeat risk.
What to Document for Your Insurance Claim
Reducing Repeat Risk
Properties that have been broken into once face elevated risk of a second burglary within weeks. The most effective post-burglary improvements: anti-snap TS007 3-star cylinder upgrades from £65 per cylinder installed, door frame reinforcement at kick-in points, and rear gate security.
We provide a free security assessment with any post-burglary lock replacement. Call 07984 547185 for same-day attendance.
